INTERVIEWS: 10 QUESTIONS WITH UPCOMING STAR-SEUN ONI (SAEON)

Most of you may have come across alot of arictles of Saeon of late, well reason being its her time for the buzz. Previously featured on Bella Naija and NotjustOk, Gidilounge, now finally on GidiNoize. Here it is a little different, unlike the others we get to hear directly from the girl in question. We present to you once again, Saeon.

#1 Describe yourself briefly. Let the readers know who seaon(seun oni) is. Go as personal as you can, I’m sure the readers deal in details.

ANS: OK, I’m Seun Oni. Stage name, saeon. I love God, music (knew I wanted to do this at the early age of 3), kids and relating with people. I would say I’m pretty down to earth; what you see is what you get! I hate it when people get the wrong perspective about me, so I’m quite straight forward. I love hanging out with friends, and family, love to dance, watch movies and series. Seun is Playful and a bit rugged. My mum and a couple of friends would say I’m quite selfless cos I love to help a lot. In one sentence, you can say I’m sexy-tough-sassy-burlesque!!!
Wow, hope I didn’t starch too much? :D

#2. Lol No Saeon, you dint starch too much.  I’m aware that you write your songs yourself and noticed you have a couple of love songs. We want to know if they are random or inspired by a particular “someone” – your boyfriend maybe?

ANS: I have a short tune in my head, finish it up before I write it. I started out writing love songs because the tunes in my head always sounded like happy or sad love songs so I’d put myself in the shoes of someone who was either happy or sad in love. At the time, I was 13, what did I know about love??? But over the years, I started writing about stuff that happened to me. so I guess you can also say some are inspired by past boyfie’s but no, I don’t have a boyfriend at the moment.

#3 So far, what do you think you may have faced that you consider a trial/difficulty in the music industry in Nigeria?

ANS: *sigh* I started out professionally mid last year so I really haven’t faced too many trials. I had a manager for a bit, but let him go because it really wasn’t working out. I’ve been on my own since then and I’m grateful because my family supports me all the way. It has not been easy though, but its not been all that bad (speaking just for myself).

#4 In the reply to the previous question, you said “its not been easy though”. Now in detail, as much as you can give, explain that. Maybe examples, or particular occurrences might help.

ANS: Yeah, I mean sometimes you want to accomplish certain goals within a period of time and because of certain limitations, you have to wait. I’m always ALWAYS up for anything when it comes to music but when you are working with people, you have to consider their schedules you know, like I’ve had to readjust as opposed to thinking I can get things done exactly when I want.
Other stuff get in the way too, I’m a very fragile/sensitive person so I react to harmattan. I loose my voice and I know I’ve had to strain it a couple of times just to voice a track despite my condition…
So stuff like that’s what compelled the “its not been easy” statement…lolz nothing major! I’m grateful!!!

#5 What has been your most exciting moment of this whole journey in industry–(any groupie moments)??–lol don’t lie o!

ANS: LoL!!! I’ve worked with a couple of artists, new like me, so its been quite normal for me, although I flipped, like in all angles, this one time when BankyW needed help I could render and had to follow me on twitter. Days later we met at a birthday party and he was like “I know this face, you are Seun right?” I may have PIMP(peed in my pants)…lolz.
Also met Bez and he’s pretty cool although I’m sometimes elated at the fact that he’s my friend because I’m like his biggest fan. I’ve also worked with Cobhams, Ibk and Laitan who are all part of Cobhams Asuquo Music Production (Camp) and they’re like the best music makers IMO. Cobhams is such a darl because he’s got a great gift and doesn’t limit himself and once he meets you, he’ll never forget  your name–extremely friendly!
My most exciting moment would have to be when I was recording Let It Go (Oops) in CAMP, It was a dream come true, like so surreal, I found myself jumping involuntarily…LoLz

#6 Well I was going to ask if there are any renowned Nigerian artistes you would love to work with, but you seem to have already answered the question in a way on the previous one. So would there be any other one that you are still very hype about and hope to work with in the future? Reason?

ANS: yeah, sure thang, I’m always up to work with really good artists not just anybody though, a few would be Chykay, TeeOhGee, and definitely international ones too… saaaaaay Neyo, Usher etc yeah, I’m a high aimer :)

#7 When did you come to terms with the fact that you could sing and possibly get a career in this? Would you be able to say who your greatest inspiration has been concerning your singing.

ANS: oh, I’ve always wanted this, since I can remember, like I’ve always sang and wanted to sing my own songs. It was just up to me to figure out how to write one and it came, naturally. About my greatest inspiration, that would have to be my dad. He’s got the loveliest voice for a man and I guess I picked that up from him. Growing up, I listened to Whitney Houston, Brandy, Usher, Craig David, Cheryl Crowe, Toni Braxton and Mariah Carey. They and countless other artists have collectively inspired me.

#8 So when should we be expecting an album? Anytime soon?

ANS: hmmm for now, I just want to release and share say… 5 singles because I leave in a bit for school and this is an awareness process for me so that I don’t have to start from scratch when I’m done with my masters (Warwick, England, International relations). Definitely, then there’d be full albums.

#9 In all honesty, tell us what you think is special about the music you are bringing to the Nigerian music industry. What makes Seun Oni’s music different from the rest out there? *take a deep breath and then you can answer, lol*

ANS: everyone talks about a having a brand and I believe in branding one’s self but the thing is, I’m not limited to just one style. Anyone one can do anything they set their mind to. I started out as an R’n’B singer and now I dabble in almost errthang; rap, rock, techno, pop, etc. The uniqueness that I’d bring would definitely be in terms of my style of writing, attitude(singing personality) and my voice so y’all should look out for those 3.

#10 When do your songs start airing? Which one would you suggest the readers of this interview listen to right now. The one you pick obviously would be the one I would post here, or would you like me to suggest one for them? *raised eyebrow* just kidding!

ANS: presently they’ve started airing on 99.9 kiss fm, 98.3 hot fm in Abuja. I hope to circulate them here in Lagos and around the country, although my best bet for now would be via the internet, they are actually on iwantairplay, bellanaija, gidilounge and gbedufiver. Just search for saeon. I’d suggest readers to listen to all of them actually, even though I know you would pick “We Are One” if I ask you to :) lolz. My fave for now would have to be “Fever”.
